Thirteen Reasons Why

April's selection is "Thirteen Reasons Why" and thanks to our friends at Legacy HS, there are books in the library for the first lucky readers to grab as soon as you like.  Please join us April 12th after school in the MRHS library to discuss the things we loved about this novel and to enjoy some tasty treats provided by Ms. Barrus and Mrs. Williams.

From Amazon.com --
"Clay Jensen returns home from school to find a mysterious box with his name on it lying on his porch. Inside he discovers cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker—his classmate and crush—who committed suicide two weeks earlier.
On tape, Hannah explains that there are thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Clay is one of them. If he listens, he’ll find out how he made the list.
Through Hannah and Clay’s dual narratives, debut author Jay Asher weaves an intricate and heartrending story of confusion and desperation that will deeply affect teen readers."

Birth Marked

We met last Thursday to discuss Breathing Underwater and had a fantastic time sharing the bitter and sweet things in life and our novel.  We would also like to extend big hugs and welcome all those interested in joining us for yummy treats, delicious book discussions and general shenanigans every month in the MRHS library.

The selection for next month (March) will be Birth Marked by Caragh M. O'Brien (ya think she's Irish?).  We will be discussing the book Thursday March 8th at 3:15ish.

Check it out and join us for a fun discussion.  If you have not already reserved your copy with Mrs. Williams, you can still join us for the discussion and offer up that book you've always wanted to read at our next meeting.  See you there!

January Club Pick

Our first meeting of the year kicked off with some fairly deep conversation based on last month's pick, Matched by Ally Condie.  Smiles were all around as we discussed our favorite bits while devouring tasty thematic treats provided by Mrs. Williams.

This month's selection is Breathing Underwater by Alex Flinn.

Amazon.com Review--
"It was only a slap. Well, maybe more than one. And maybe Nick used his fist at the end when the anger got out of control. But his girlfriend Caitlin deserved it--hadn't she defied him by singing in the school talent show when he had forbidden her to display herself like that? Even though he'd told her that everybody would laugh at her because she couldn't sing and was a fat slob? Both were lies. Because Caitlin was so beautiful, the only person who understood him. Out of his desperate need for her came all the mean words and the hitting. But now Caitlin's family has procured a restraining order to keep Nick away, and the judge has sentenced him to Mario Ortega's Family Violence class, to sit around every week with six other angry guys who hit their girlfriends. And to write a journal explaining how he got into this mess."

J. Steiner (Lina) says...
"I remember this book from high school. It was harsh and powerful. It was shockingly real. I love the main character and the emotions he has under the surface."

Bonnie Huntley says...
"My son loved this book. He started in class during 8th grade but was unable to finish the book before the end of school.  In less than a day he finished the book"

What will you say?

Join us: January 26th at 3pm in the library

Let the literary love continue...
